Mobility management: Deployment and adaptability aspects through mobile data traffic analysis
نویسندگان
چکیده
The expected boost in mobile data traffic and the evolution towards the next generation of networks are making cellular operators reconsider whether current approaches for handling mobility could be improved, according to the characteristics of the mobile traffic that actually flows through real networks. In this work, we make use of extensive analysis of real network traces to infer the main characteristics of mobile data traffic for a particular operator. Our analysis focuses on the features related to mobility, i.e., location information, number of handovers, or duration of the data traffic exchange. New techniques to gather the mobility characteristics of the user based on data and control packets correlation are designed and applied to compare the gains of deploying different mobility management approaches. We show that adapting the mobility management mechanism to the degree of mobility and the network characteristics brings some benefits to the network operator over the current approach, especially in scenarios of low mobility, where a dstributed mobility management solution proves to be more efficient. © 2016 Elsevier B.V. Access and Mobility Policy Control at the Network Edge
The fifth generation (5G) system architecture is defined as service-based and the core network functions are described as sets of services accessible through application programming interfaces (API). One of the components of 5G is Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) which provides the open access to radio network functions through API. Using the mobile edge API third party analytics applications ...
متن کاملDistributed retrieval of management information: is it about mobility, locality or distribution?
In this paper we present results from an experimental study addressing the use of mobile agents in the retrieval of management information. We compare several agent-based models for distributed collection and processing of management data, focusing on performance but also considering network traffic and setup costs. This study reveals that in many situations the performance of mobile agent syst...
متن کاملA network architecture for MPLS-based micro-mobility
Current mobile networks provide link-layer mobility as a mobile host changes its point of attachment within the scope of an access node, and provide wide-area mobility through global mobility protocols such as Mobile IP. Recently, several proposals have been made for an intermediate level of mobility support, called micro-mobility which addresses the issues of handover latency, signaling overhe...
متن کاملIntegrating mobile agent technology with multi-agent systems for distributed traffic detection and management systems
Agent technology is rapidly emerging as a powerful computing paradigm to cope with the complexity in dynamic distributed systems, such as traffic control and management systems. However, while a number of agent-based traffic control and management systems have been proposed and the multi-agent systems have been studied, to the best of our knowledge, the mobile agent technology has not been appl...
متن کاملEfficient Mobile Data Offloading Using WiFi Access Points
The wide-spread proliferation of smartphone-like devices has caused a tremendous increase in mobile data usage unmatched by the slower increasing available bandwidth. Consequently, this has caused severe traffic overloading in cellular networks. An immediate available remedy for this problem is offloading the traffic through WiFi access points. In this paper, we study the deployment and recruit...
